I read this article in Wired that is making me rethink how I blog. I didn’t read it that deeply or that closely because I was testing the issue, but the gist that I took away was that blogging was thinking out loud. And I’ve never really thought about it in that way. I’ve always felt that my blogging needs to be polished, professional, and I’m starting to think that’s why I don’t blog more. I’m stifling myself, because I make writing a blog post into a big production. I brainstorm, I outline, I write rough drafts, I edit; you know, all of those things that I was taught to do when I write something.
Which is not to say that these things don’t have merit. They do, they really do. I firmly believe that edited text is always going to be much better than an off the cuff comment, and I think there is a large value to thinking things through and working through your ideas. I think the web could use a lot more editing, and a lot more thinking things through.
But I think I could do more writing on the fly. There’s been a lot of things that I’ve been thinking about lately that I should just write about without going through all the planning and brainstorming and whatnot. I need to trust my own wings, and just get some words down.
